Josef Engemann

Josef Engemann was a German archaeologist. From 1965 to 1998 he regularly took part in the excavation campaigns of the Germanic Archaeological Institute of Abu Mena, Egypt. In 1972 he completed his habilitation at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn for Christian archeology with an investigation into the burial symbolism of the late Roman Empire. The University of Bonn appointed him associate professor in 1975. Since 1978 Engemann was head of the Department of Archeology of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Bonn; in 1984 he was appointed to the newly created chair for this subject, which he held until 1991
