A journey into the problem of knowledge and the relationship between man and the reality that surrounds him. The fundamental notion of this text is the analysis of the myth: "Today, the term myth often means something unreal or simply a more or less fantastic legend. By the word mythos, on the other hand, I mean what it traditionally meant, that is, a different way that men have of expressing a belief, or rather a truth, which is not necessarily "clear and distinct" to reason and which, nevertheless, is accepted as obvious and therefore does not need to be proven ». Along with the myth, Panikkar analyzes another fundamental notion, the symbol. It represents the whole reality as it appears and manifests itself through its multiple structure. This constitutive link is direct, without intermediaries; it does not need any explanation: the symbol is for every subject something that does not need any interpretation. The symbol is the instrument of the myth just as reason is the vehicle of the logos; the symbols are therefore the "ultimate bricks with which the building of reality is built". Myth and logos go hand in hand, like two eyes looking at the same object, but not in the same way. At the end of the volume Panikkar reflects on worship, which is the rite of the symbol in action, a fundamental expression of homo religiosus and an activity that man performs in communion with the cosmos for the sustenance of the universe: the rite is in fact action which allows the secular to be lived in its sacredness.
