A fascinating and captivating text by two of the most important writers on pilgrimages. The volume deals with the deep sense of the Roman Jubilee pilgrimages in the history of the Catholic Church. An extraordinary photographic campaign leads the reader into Rome’s most significant holy places, even the most hidden ones which are part of the Jubilee Pilgrimage in the city. Rome has been the main destination for Christian groups of pilgrims to the Saint Peter’s and Saint Paul’s basilicas since the fourth century. The first Roman Jubilee was instituted by Pope Boniface VIII in the year 1300. Henceforth, Saint Peter’s became the most important and symbolic place for the Christian cult (much more than San Giovanni in Laterano, seat of the Catholic Popes) and many Jubilees took place ever since, until the last one, instituted for the new millennium by Pope John Paul II. Although Saint Peter’s famous basilica is the main and best known holy building of Rome, the city has another six Jubilee basilicas and seven Jubilee churches. The aim of this work is to show a complete itinerary trough the Roman holy places by depicting the most relevant Roman architectures and artworks and their spiritual meaning. It’s a thorough and complete guide to the Jubilee and to the principal places involved.
